The\u00a0<\/span>Woolworth Building<\/b>, at 233\u00a0<\/span>Broadway<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Manhattan<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>New York City<\/a>, designed by architect\u00a0<\/span>Cass Gilbert<\/a>\u00a0and completed in 1913, is one of the\u00a0<\/span>oldest skyscrapers<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. The land for the building was purchased by F. W. Woolworth on March 11, 1910, from the Trenor Luther Park Estate for two million dollars. More than a century after the start of its construction, it remains, at 241.4 meters (792\u00a0ft), one of the\u00a0<\/span>fifty tallest buildings in the United States<\/a>\u00a0as well as one of the\u00a0<\/span>twenty tallest buildings in New York City<\/a>. It has been a\u00a0<\/span>National Historic Landmark<\/a>\u00a0since 1966,\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span>New York City landmark<\/a>\u00a0since 1983.<\/span><\/p>\n

…Originally planned to be 625 feet (191\u00a0m) high, the building was eventually elevated to 792 feet (241\u00a0m).\u00a0At its opening, the Woolworth Building was 60 stories tall and had over 5,000 windows.\u00a0The construction cost was\u00a0US$13.5 million\u00a0and Woolworth paid all of it in cash. On completion, the Woolworth building overtook the\u00a0Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower<\/a>\u00a0as the world’s tallest building.<\/p>\n

The building opened on April 24, 1913. President\u00a0Woodrow Wilson<\/a>\u00a0turned the lights on by way of a button in\u00a0Washington, D.C.<\/a>\u00a0that evening.<\/p>\n
