The\u00a0Cathedral of St. John: The Great Divine<\/b>, officially the\u00a0Cathedral Church of Saint John: The Great Divine in the City and Diocese of New York<\/b>, is the\u00a0cathedral<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Episcopal Diocese of New York<\/a>. It is located at 1047\u00a0Amsterdam Avenue<\/a>,\u00a0New York City<\/a>\u00a0(between West\u00a0110th Street<\/a>, which is also known as “Cathedral Parkway”, and 113th Street) in\u00a0Manhattan<\/a>‘s\u00a0Morningside Heights<\/a>. The New York\u00a0St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center<\/a>\u00a0and the campus of\u00a0Columbia University<\/a>\u00a0are nearby.<\/div>\n

The cathedral disputes with\u00a0Liverpool Anglican Cathedral<\/a>\u00a0the title of the largest cathedral and Anglican church\u00a0and fourth largest Christian church in the world.\u00a0The inside covers 121,000 sq\u00a0ft (11,200\u00a0m2<\/sup>), spanning a length of 183.2 meters (601\u00a0ft) and height 70.7 meters (232\u00a0ft). The inside height of the nave is 37.8 meters (124\u00a0feet).<\/p>\n

The cathedral, designed in 1888 and begun in 1892, has, in its history, undergone radical stylistic changes and the interruption of the two World Wars. Originally designed as\u00a0Byzantine<\/a>–Romanesque<\/a>, the plan was changed after 1969 to a\u00a0Gothic<\/a>\u00a0design.\u00a0After a large fire on December 18, 2001, it was closed for repairs and reopened in November 2008.\u00a0It remains\u00a0unfinished<\/a>, with construction and restoration a continuing process.\u00a0As as result, it is often nicknamed\u00a0St. John the Unfinished<\/i>.
