The Chapel of the Holy Cross<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0Roman Catholic<\/a>\u00a0chapel<\/a>\u00a0built into the\u00a0mesas<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Sedona, Arizona<\/a>, which was inspired and commissioned by sculptor\u00a0Marguerite Brunswig Staude<\/a>.\u00a0Richard Hein<\/a>\u00a0was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect\u00a0August K. Strotz<\/a>, both from the firm of\u00a0Anshen & Allen<\/a>. The chapel is built on\u00a0Coconino National Forest<\/a>\u00a0land; the late Senator\u00a0Barry Goldwater<\/a>\u00a0assisted Staude in obtaining a\u00a0special-use permit<\/a>. The construction supervisor was Fred Courkos, who built the chapel in 18 months at a cost of US$300,000. The chapel was completed in 1956.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The American Institute of Architects gave the Chapel its Award of Honor in 1957. In the sculptor’s words, \u201cThough Catholic in faith, as a work of art, the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men and be a living reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2007, Arizonans voted the Chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona,[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and it is also the site of one of the so-called\u00a0Sedona vortices<\/a>.<\/p>\n
