Royal Bank Plaza<\/b>\u00a0in\u00a0Toronto<\/a>,\u00a0Ontario<\/a>,\u00a0Canada<\/a>, is the\u00a0de facto<\/a><\/i>\u00a0headquarters of the\u00a0Royal Bank of Canada<\/a>. The building shares with the\u00a0Fairmont Royal York Hotel<\/a>\u00a0the block in\u00a0Toronto’s financial district<\/a>\u00a0bordered by\u00a0Bay<\/a>,\u00a0Front<\/a>, York, and Wellington streets. It is owned by the real estate firm\u00a0Oxford Properties<\/a>, who also maintains their headquarters there.

Built to be the new main office of the Royal Bank [1979, WZMH Architects] after its decision to move its center of operations from\u00a0Place Ville Marie<\/a>\u00a0in Montreal to Toronto in the late 1970s, Royal Bank Plaza consists of two office buildings: the South Tower and the North Tower. The South Tower, a\u00a0skyscraper<\/a>, is the taller of the two at 180\u00a0m (591\u00a0ft); the North Tower has a height of 112\u00a0m (367\u00a0ft). The exteriors of the structures are largely covered with glass; together they have more than 14,000 windows. The windows, manufactured by\u00a0Canadian Pittsburgh Industries<\/a>, were colored using 2,500 ounces of\u00a0gold<\/a>\u00a0valued at CA$70 per pane when installed.

In addition to office space and the Toronto Main Branch of the Royal Bank, Royal Bank Plaza also contains a shopping concourse which is part of the\u00a0PATH<\/a>\u00a0network, linking directly to the\u00a0TD Centre<\/a>\u00a0as well as\u00a0Union Station<\/a>,\u00a0Brookfield Place (BCE Place)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Fairmont Royal York<\/a>. The concourse merchants mall and tower lobbies underwent extensive renovations between 2005 and 2007.<\/p>\n

The building was originally constructed with a large atrium opening above the main banking hall, but in the 1990s a trading floor was added, closing off the open space.<\/p>\n
