The\u00a0Empire State Building<\/strong>\u00a0is a 102-story\u00a0skyscraper<\/a>\u00a0located in\u00a0Midtown Manhattan<\/a>,\u00a0New York City<\/a>, at the intersection of\u00a0Fifth Avenue<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0West 34th Street<\/a>. It has a roof height of 1,250\u00a0feet (381 meters), and with its\u00a0antenna<\/a>\u00a0spire included, it stands a total of 1,454\u00a0ft (443.2 m) high.\u00a0Its name is derived from the\u00a0nickname<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0New York<\/a>, the\u00a0Empire State<\/a>. It stood as the\u00a0world’s tallest building<\/a>\u00a0for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the\u00a0World Trade Center<\/a>‘s North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the\u00a0September 11 attacks<\/a>\u00a0in 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world). The Empire State Building was once again demoted to the second-tallest building in New York on April 30, 2012, when the new\u00a0One World Trade Center<\/a>\u00a0reached a greater height.\u00a0The Empire State Building is currently the\u00a0third-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States<\/a>\u00a0(after the\u00a0Willis Tower<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Trump International Hotel and Tower<\/a>, both in\u00a0Chicago<\/a>), and the 15th-tallest in the world (the tallest now is\u00a0Burj Khalifa<\/a>, located in Dubai). It is also the\u00a0fourth-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Empire State Building is generally thought of as an\u00a0American<\/a>\u00a0cultural icon<\/a>. Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon in the distinctive\u00a0Art Deco<\/a>\u00a0style and has been named as one of the\u00a0Seven Wonders of the Modern World<\/a>\u00a0by the American Society of Civil Engineers<\/a>. The building and its street floor interior are designated landmarks of the\u00a0New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission<\/a> and confirmed by the\u00a0New York City Board of Estimate<\/a>.\u00a0It was designated as a\u00a0National Historic Landmark<\/a>\u00a0in 1986.\u00a0In 2007, it was ranked number one on the\u00a0List of America’s Favorite Architecture according to the AIA<\/a>.<\/p>\n
