Schwarzman Building<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a title=\"New York Public Library\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Public_Library\">New York Public Library<\/a>, more widely known as the\u00a0<strong>Main Branch<\/strong>\u00a0or simply as &#8220;<strong>the New York Public Library<\/strong>,&#8221; is the flagship building in the New York Public Library\u00a0<a title=\"Library system\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Library_system\">system<\/a>\u00a0and a prominent historic landmark in\u00a0<a title=\"Midtown Manhattan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midtown_Manhattan\">Midtown Manhattan<\/a>. Following a competition among the city&#8217;s most famous architects, the relatively unknown firm of\u00a0<a title=\"Carr\u00e8re and Hastings\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carr%C3%A8re_and_Hastings\">Carr\u00e8re and Hastings<\/a>\u00a0was selected to design and construct the new library. The result, regarded as the apex of Beaux-Arts design, was the largest marble structure up to that time in the United States. The cornerstone was laid in May 1902.\u00a0The branch, opened in 1911, is one of four research libraries in the library system. The room is lined with thousands of\u00a0<a title=\"Reference work\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reference_work\">reference works<\/a>\u00a0on open shelves along the floor level and along the balcony, lit by massive windows and grand\u00a0<a title=\"Chandelier\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chandelier\">chandeliers<\/a>, and furnished with sturdy wood tables, comfortable chairs, and\u00a0<a title=\"Brass\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brass\">brass<\/a>\u00a0lamps. It is also equipped with computers providing access to library collections and the\u00a0<a title=\"Internet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet\">Internet<\/a>\u00a0as well as docking facilities for\u00a0<a title=\"Laptop\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laptop\">laptops<\/a>. Readers study books brought to them from the library&#8217;s closed stacks. There are special rooms named for notable authors and scholars, many of whom have done important research and writing at the Library. But the Library has always been about more than scholars; during the Great Depression, many members of the general public, out of work, used the Library to improve their lot in life, as they still do.<sup id=\"cite_ref-plhist_2-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Public_Library_Main_Branch#cite_note-plhist-2\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The building was declared a\u00a0<a title=\"National Historic Landmark\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Historic_Landmark\">National Historic Landmark<\/a>\u00a0in 1965.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nhlsum_1-1\"><a
