At 1,046 feet (319&nbsp;m),&nbsp;the structure was the world&#8217;s tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the&nbsp;<a title=\"Empire State Building\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empire_State_Building\">Empire State Building<\/a>&nbsp;in 1931.&nbsp;It is still the tallest&nbsp;<em>brick<\/em>&nbsp;building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. After the&nbsp;<a title=\"September 11 attacks\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/September_11_attacks\">destruction<\/a>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a title=\"World Trade Center\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Trade_Center\">World Trade Center<\/a>, it was again the second-tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the&nbsp;<a title=\"Spire\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spire\">spire<\/a>&nbsp;was raised on the 1,200-foot (365.8 m)&nbsp;<a title=\"Bank of America Tower (New York)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bank_of_America_Tower_(New_York)\">Bank of America Tower<\/a>, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition,&nbsp;<a title=\"The New York Times Building\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Times_Building\">The New York Times Building<\/a>, which opened in 2007, is exactly level with the Chrysler Building in height.&nbsp;Both buildings were then pushed into 4th position, when the under construction&nbsp;<a title=\"One World Trade Center\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_World_Trade_Center\">One World Trade Center<\/a>&nbsp;surpassed their height.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/paulpiazzaarchitect.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ChryslerBldgDusk-575x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Chrysler Bldg Dusk\" class=\"wp-image-233\" style=\"width:835px;height:auto\" title=\"Chrysler Bldg Dusk\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulpiazzaarchitect.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ChryslerBldgDusk-575x1024.jpg 575w, https:\/\/paulpiazzaarchitect.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ChryslerBldgDusk-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chrysler_Building#Recognition_and_appeal\">one of the finest buildings in New York City<\/a>. In 2007, it was ranked ninth on the&nbsp;<em><a title=\"List of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_America%27s_Favorite_Architecture_according_to_the_AIA\">List of America&#8217;s Favorite Architecture<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;by the&nbsp;<a title=\"American Institute of Architects\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Institute_of_Architects\">American Institute of Architects<\/a>.&nbsp;It was the headquarters of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Chrysler\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chrysler\">Chrysler Corporation<\/a>&nbsp;from 1930 until the mid-1950s, but, although the building was built and designed specifically for the car manufacturer, the corporation did not pay for the construction of it and never owned it, as&nbsp;<a title=\"Walter P. Chrysler\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_P._Chrysler\">Walter P. Chrysler\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_P._Chrysler\">Walter P. Chrysler<\/a>.&nbsp;When the ground breaking occurred on September 19, 1928, there was an intense competition in New York City to build the world&#8217;s tallest skyscraper.&nbsp;Despite a frantic pace (the building was built at an average rate of four floors per week), no workers died during the construction of this skyscraper.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Chrysler123_13-0\"><a
